What Is Commercial Auto Insurance?

Commercial auto insurance is a special auto insurance policy designed to protect your business from a set portion of the cost of a legal claim against you, property damage to your vehicles and cargo, and medical payments to your drivers after an accident. In the state of Nevada, drivers who haul cargo for clients are required to also carry cargo insurance. The policy must cover at least $5,000 of cargo against theft and damage on the road.

What Does Commercial Auto Insurance Cover?

Your business faces risks each day, from accidents, losses, and legal claims. Businesses are much more likely to be sued than individuals, and they are far more likely to be sued for large sums. Commercial auto insurance works to reduce the financial risks you take by putting your employees and property out on the highways and roads each day. You can include many coverage options, depending on your business needs, such as:

Bodily injury liability: This coverage is mandatory under NV state law. It helps to cover the settlement costs and your legal defense if your business is sued after an accident involving one of your vehicles. The minimum liability coverage required by state law is very low compared to the high cost of a legal claim, especially against a business. For this reason, many business owners choose to purchase as much liability coverage as they can afford.

Property damage liability: Property damage liability is also mandated by NV state law. It covers a set portion of the cost of repairs to the vehicles and property of others, if you or an employee causes an accident in your commercial vehicle. This can be especially important coverage if your company uses large trucks and vans that have the potential do do great damage.

Collision: This helps to pay the cost of repairs to or replacement of your vehicles after an accident.

Comprehensive: This can cover the cost of storm damage, vandalism, theft, and other non-collision causes.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist: If your commercial car or truck is hit by an uninsured driver, this coverage can help make up the difference in repair costs and hospital bill reimbursement.

Medical payments: This can help with medical fees and funeral expenses, if you or one of your employees suffers an injury in an accident on the job.

Cargo insurance: This is required for all cargo delivery drivers in the state of NV. You must keep at least $5,000 of cargo coverage. However, if you typically haul expensive items like electronics, furniture, artwork, or other valuable cargo, you may need to purchase much more than $5,000 in cargo coverage.

Trailer insurance: This can help with the cost of damage to your trailers due to accidents, or theft and vandalism.

Cargo loading and unloading: If your employees spend a lot of time loading cargo, this can help with the cost of cargo-related injuries.

Commercial drivers in Nevada must carry proof of insurance at all times, with the VIN number of the vehicle clearly listed. You can also purchase insurance for an entire fleet of vehicles at once, and simply place the policy holder's name on the fleet insurance cards, instead of individual VIN numbers.
